i came home from work today around dusk to meet up with a guy appraising the value of my car for insurance and legal purposes. he was very kind, his name was chris and he pulled up in an altima with a striped polo. as we are talking about the accident and the damages, i ask him if there is any way i can get my car repaired. chris tells me as long as the damages are more than 75% of the total value of the vehicle, he legally has to mark it as totaled.
he asks to take pictures of the odometer and the vin number. as he’s taking pictures, chris tells me most of his job is taking photos, and that this was his first time back working in three months. he goes on to mention how he’s had 4 eye surgeries, 3 in his left, and 1 in his right. chris says he’s partially blind in his left eye, but at this point after going thru all the surgeries, he’d be happy with just one eye. damn. it humbled me, because you never know what someone is going through as cliche as it sounds. i simply would’ve never guessed.
chris finished taking photos as i walked into my house and up to my room, thankful i could see the sunset from the 2nd floor window. a gradient purple haze that transformed into a light pink the further you looked.
it was magnificent.
