opossums in the backyard, 11.15.20

i’ve been encountering opossums in the backyard this past month. one was sleeping right outside the house when i took bagel out, and the other was running in the backyard. doing my research, i found they don’t survive long in the wild, especially in the colder months because they have thin fur. most people think they’re ugly, but they look cute to me! i left some asiago cheese the other night on a plate, and when i woke the next morning, it was gone. i don’t know if it was a neighborhood cat or what, but i wanted to figure out. i left some more cheese tonight and lo and behold, it was an opossum! there were two, one small and one big. the big didn’t seem to let the smaller one eat as much, as at one point, they touched noses and the smaller one backed off. it was so cool to see. i kept sitting at the window checking for hours. i went to lay down, then something told me to check one last time. when i did, i saw the fatter opossum approaching the bowl. shit was perfect timing. it was the highlight of my night/morning, had me hyped as hell. they ate, then went about their business into the bushes. i gotta get some veggies and things from walmart for them tomorrow night. this is so damn exciting.

note to myself: leave two bowls out.
