knowing my parents, 7.17.19

in my opinion, there’s two sides to an individual. one is their character, the other is their interests. i know my parents well considering their character, but i do not know them at all considering their interests. what sparked this thought was earlier when i was in the drive-thru line with storm at taco bell. i was playing don’t dream it’s over, and telling him how much i romanticize the 1980’s. he asked if he could play a song from the 1980’s after. he mentioned the band of the song he was playing was his mom’s favorite band. i thought that was so cool, because i couldn’t tell you neither of my parents’ favorite band, if they had one, which i don’t know if they do or not. i don’t even know my dad’s favorite car or my mom’s favorite movie. i remember one time asking my dad about life in the 1980’s and he said he didn’t really indulge himself in too much because him and my mom were running away from a genocide. that made me sad. my parents sacrificed a lot not only to get to where they are, but to raise my brother, my sister, and i.

i’m hoping all my dreams come true sooner rather than later, so that both my dad and my mom can have a chance to indulge not only in the finer things of life, but in american culture as well.

because after all, america is the greatest country in the world.
