i let bagel out before i drove dono to the airport. bagel kept sniffing what seemed like dead grass in the middle of the yard, before the incline. i pulled him away, but he was adamant on examining it. as i let him sniff, i saw two pairs of eyes. when bagel saw them, he charged and bunnies came hopping out! bagel put one in his mouth, but i got him to drop it immediately. i was so surprised. 3 bunnies ran out and slowly hopped away. being in a time crunch, i took btg inside and drove dono to the airport. when i came back, i did research on rabbit nests. i am sure the rabbits were eastern cottontails. the mother digs the nest, has her kids, and covers it up with dead grass and get this, fur from her stomach. she visits twice a day to nurse her offspring, which are called kits. this would make sense as i saw the mom at 1am something last week when i let btg out. i found it strange she didn’t move when bagel was peeing, but adding she was by where the nest was found, it all added up.
doing internet research, i came across a few sources claiming moms won’t return to a disturbed nest, or that if they feel in danger, they will abandon the nest. this prompted me to search for the kits to return them to the nest. there was one in the nest still, so i remade the nest and left him alone. it’s been an hour and i can’t find the rest of them. i feel so bad because they may not be fully grown to fend on their own, which may lead them to being prey in the middle of the night.
ugh, this is stressful.
